Nolin River Lake to reach spillway pool May 6

Published May 5, 2011

Nolin River Lake, Ky. – In the past 24 hours Nolin River Lake has risen 1.75 feet to a new record pool of 559.24 feet, and based on current data will reach its spillway pool of 560 feet late afternoon or early evening today.

When this occurs, releases will begin through the overflow spillway and will flood portions of State Highway 728 just west of the dam. When water begins to flow across Highway 728, the highway will be closed. This may affect anyone who normally travels across the dam to reach their destination. Visitors, who wish to view water in the emergency spillway, can do so by visiting the lake office by the dam. There will be no access on the west side by Jock Road.

Releases through the conduit are currently at approximately 1,400 cubic feet per second and will be incrementally increased to 2,000 cfs starting at noon central daylight time today. Once the pool reaches spillway crest, the flow thru the conduit will be increased to match the inflow into the lake. Once the total release (conduit and spillway) matches the inflow, the pool elevation will crest. The conduit will remain at that setting until the pool falls below spillway level.

Area subdivision roads around the shoreline are being impacted be the increased level of the lake. Adjacent landowners who have items below the flowage easement line, also known as the yellow line, should make every effort to remove the items quickly before they become inundated by flood waters.

The Corps is working with local and state emergency operation managers in efforts to keep people affected by this situation safe and informed. This is a collaborative effort.
