USACE announces upcoming maintenance activities at Brookville Lake

Louisville District
Published March 8, 2022

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting maintenance activities at Brookville Lake in Brookville, Indiana, which could impact downstream fishery conditions and recreation public access to the tailwater area. These activities are scheduled to begin in April and last through August 2022.

Maintenance activities will require variability in outflows that will increase the uncertainty of water volume and temperature downstream this season, which may impact the downstream fishery. We will do our best to provide outflows whenever possible during the work, but increased uncertainty in downstream conditions is to be expected.

In response to the variable tailwater flow conditions, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources will be canceling the April Brown Trout stocking for this year, moving the normal April stocking of 1,500 Rainbow Trout to the fall, and assist with moving fish downstream if needed. The Brown Trout stocking of 2,600 fish supplied by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service will continue in 2023.

Lake maintenance activities include:

  • Main gate rehabilitation and periodic inspection work: periods of activity affecting downstream flows are expected in early to mid-April and early to mid-July, each lasting approximately one to two weeks in duration. In addition, several one-to-two-day intervals of daytime low to no flow are expected in mid-June, and July-August timeframe.
  • Tailwater haul road and riprap construction: tailwater road construction will affect public access for purposes of fishing from late May-August. The Tailwater Fishermen’s Access Area parking lot will be closed and public access restricted. Riprap work along the tailwater may require low flow conditions during daytime hours and is expected to take place July-August. Portions of the Tailwater Recreation Area near the river are expected to be within the work zone and public access will be restricted. Parking lot, picnic shelters and restrooms are tentatively expected to remain open, subject to changing conditions. The Dam Vista and access road will be closed April-July.

The times and duration of these activities are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors. Any questions concerning the upcoming work can be directed to the Brookville Lake Office at (765) 647-6701.
