Camping - Rough River Lake

Numerous Federal and State operated campgrounds provide a wide range of opportunities at various locations around the lake.

Corps of Engineers Operated Campgrounds

Axtel
is a Class A campground, and it has 158 sites (91 with electricity), swimming area, boat launching ramp, dump station, flush restrooms, playground, showers and potable water.

For 2015, the campground is open from April 17 thru November 2.  The fees range from $17 to $24. Reservations may be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov.  There is a detailed map of the campground on their website.

Driving Directions: From Louisville, KY: Take US 31 west to US 60 2 miles south of Muldraugh, KY.  Take US 60 to Harned, KY, turning south on Highway 259. Travel 9 miles and turn west on Highway 79. Follow for .5 miles to the Axtel Campground entrance. Physical address is 663 South Highway 79, McDaniels, KY 40152.


North Fork is a Class A campground and has 81 sites (50 with electricity), swimming area, boat launching ramp, dump station, flush restrooms, playground, showers and potable water, and a fishing pier.

For 2015, the campground is open from May 1 through September 16.  The fees range from $17 to $24.   Reservations may be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov.  There is a detailed map of the campground on their website.

Driving Directions:  From Louisville, KY: Take US 31 west to US 60 2 miles south of Muldraugh, KY.   Take US 60 to Harned, KY, turning south on Highway 259. Travel 9 miles to the entrance of the campground. The physical address is 9077 South Highway 259, McDaniels, KY 40152.

Laurel Branch is a Class A campground and has 77 sites (47 with electricity), swimming area, boat launching ramp, dump station, flush restrooms, playground, showers and potable water, and a fishing pier. 

For 2015, the campground is open with park attendants from May 1 through November 2. The fees range from $17 to $22.   Laurel Branch will be open during the off season at a reduced rate ($13) from March 27 - April 30 with no park attendants on duty.  Reservations may be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov.  There is a detailed map of the campground on their website.

Driving Directions:  From Louisville, KY: Take Highway 60 from Louisville to Harned, KY, 10 miles west on Highway 79 to Highway 259. Travel east on Highway 259 for .5 miles to Highway 110 west, follow Highway 110 for 1 mile. Follow signs into entrance. The physical address is 435 Laurel Branch Road, McDaniels, KY 40152.


Cave Creek is a Class A campground and has 65 sites (36 with electricity), playground, flush restrooms and pit type restroom,  boat launching ramp, dump station, showers and potable water.

For 2015, the campground is open with park volunteers from May 15 through September 16.  The fees range from $17 to $22.  Reservations may be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov.  There is a detailed map of the campground on their website.

Driving Directions:  From Elizabethtown, KY: Travel the Western Kentucky Parkway to the Leitchfield Exit, north to Highway 259 to Highway 54. West on Highway 54, for 11 miles to Highway 79.   Six miles to Highway 736, 2 miles east on Highway 736 to the campground entrance.  The physical address is 1543 Cave Creek Road, Falls of Rough, KY 40119.

Note: Remember that the campgrounds can take reservations, but only for customers physically at the campground. No phone-in reservations will be accepted at the campgrounds. Campers must use the reservation system as indicated for phone-in reservations. Camping is allowed in designated areas only.
