Camping - Rough River Lake

Numerous Federal and State operated campgrounds provide a wide range of opportunities at various locations around the lake.

Corps of Engineers Operated Campgrounds

Axtel
is a Class A campground, and it has 158 sites (91 with electricity), swimming area, boat launching ramp, dump station, flush restrooms, playground, showers and potable water.

For 2015, the campground is open from April 17 thru November 2.  The fees range from $17 to $24. Reservations may be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov.  There is a detailed map of the campground on their website.

Driving Directions:  Begin at ramp onto I-64 West toward New Albany/St. Louis, traveling 22.3 miles. Take the IN-135 exit- Exit Number 105- toward Palmyra/Corydon, onto IN-135 South toward Corydon, traveling 16.7 miles. Continue on Bypass Road KY-79 for 2.1 miles. Turn right onto KY-79, traveling 10.1 miles. Continue on 1st Avenue, KY-79S for 495 feet. Turn a slight right onto US-60, traveling 11.8 miles. Turn left onto KY-259/KY-79, traveling 9.7 miles. Turn right to stay on KY-79, traveling .7 miles.  End at 663 South Highway 79, McDaniels, KY.  Distance is approximately 74 miles with an approximate travel time of 1 hour, 20 minutes.


North Fork is a Class A campground and has 81 sites (50 with electricity), swimming area, boat launching ramp, dump station, flush restrooms, playground, showers and potable water, and a fishing pier.

For 2015, the campground is open from May 1 through September 16.  The fees range from $17 to $24.   Reservations may be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov.  There is a detailed map of the campground on their website.

Turn left onto KY-259/KY-79, traveling 9.1 miles.  End at  9077 South Highway 259, McDaniels, KY. Distance is approximately 72 miles with an approximate travel time of 1 hour, 15 minutes.

Laurel Branch is a Class A campground and has 77 sites (47 with electricity), swimming area, boat launching ramp, dump station, flush restrooms, playground, showers and potable water, and a fishing pier. 

For 2015, the campground is open with park attendants from May 1 through November 2. The fees range from $17 to $22.   Laurel Branch will be open during the off season at a reduced rate ($13) from March 27 - April 30 with no park attendants on duty.  Reservations may be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov.  There is a detailed map of the campground on their website.

Take the IN-135 exit- Exit Number 105- toward Palmyra/Corydon, onto IN-135 South toward Corydon, traveling 16.7 miles. Continue on Bypass Road KY-79 for 2.1 miles. Turn right onto KY-79, traveling 10.1 miles. Continue on 1st Avenue, KY-79S for 495 feet. Turn a slight right onto US-60, traveling 11.8 miles. Turn left onto KY-259/KY-79, traveling 10.1 miles. Turn right onto KY-110, traveling .4 miles. End at 435 Laurel Branch Road, McDaniels, KY. Distance is approximately 74 miles with an approximate travel time of 1 hour, 20 minutes.


Cave Creek is a Class A campground and has 65 sites (36 with electricity), playground, flush restrooms and pit type restroom,  boat launching ramp, dump station, showers and potable water.

For 2015, the campground is open with park volunteers from May 15 through September 16.  The fees range from $17 to $22.  Reservations may be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov.  There is a detailed map of the campground on their website.

Driving Directions:  Begin at ramp onto Gene Snyder Freeway KY-841W toward I-65, traveling 6.5 miles. Take I-65/Louisville/Nashville exit-Exit Number 10- onto I-65 S toward Nashville/Elizabethtown, traveling 34 miles. Take US-31W/KY-62/Wendell H Ford Western Kentucky Parkway/Hodgenville/Paducah exit - Exit Number 91- toward Paducah/Elizabethtown/Owensboro/Western Kentucky Parkway W, traveling 29.6 miles. Take KY-259/Leitchfield/Brownsville exit - Exit Number 107 - traveling .3 miles. Turn right onto S Main Street/KY-259, traveling .9 miles. Take 3rd exit from roundabout Courthouse Square onto W Main Street/KY-54, traveling 10.9 miles. Turn right onto Falls of Rough Road/KY-79, traveling 4.6 miles. Turn right onto Cave Creek Road KY-736, traveling 1.8 miles.  End at 1543 Cave Creek Road, Falls of Rough, KY. Distance is approximately 90 miles with an approximate travel time of 1.5 hours.

Note: Remember that the campgrounds can take reservations, but only for customers physically at the campground. No phone-in reservations will be accepted at the campgrounds. Campers must use the reservation system as indicated for phone-in reservations. Camping is allowed in designated areas only.
