Cave Run Lake exceeds record pool although spillway event not expected based on anticipated rain; Corps begins slow drawdown process

Published April 21, 2015

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville, continues to monitor the Cave Run Reservoir near Morehead, Kentucky which crested at 761.12 feet April 20 at 4:45 p.m. –less than four feet from the spillway. The corps does not expect the lake to reach the spillway as the reservoir continues to function properly.

Based on current precipitation forecasts, the corps does not expect the lake to reach the spillway crest.  The reservoir continues to function as designed, storing runoff for later release once downstream conditions allow.

The Corps continues to monitor the Licking River basin and will slowly increase releases from the lake, today. It is anticipated that the lake level will begin to recede slowly later this afternoon.

“Since we are currently 31 feet over summer pool, we'll be releasing excess storage into June,” said Mark Philips, hydraulic engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville.

As part of the ongoing dam safety plan, the dam is regularly inspected and is structurally sound. The structure is inspected annually by a licensed professional engineer, and every five years by a team of engineers.
