    Coombs' success in running mirrors success in USACE

    Completing one marathon is an accomplishment for some and a goal for many others. For Craig Coombs, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Support Section chief, that number is 51, or a marathon in every state plus Washington D.C. He has completed marathons in 18 states so far and has plans to complete five to six marathons per year until his goal is met. The 21-year Louisville District veteran’s first marathon was the Derby Festival Marathon in 2012. His approach to running is the same as his approach to successfully completing environmental projects for USACE - planning, maintaining consistency and celebrating the wins.

    USACE completes unique live-fire range at Fort Knox

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District completed construction of the Digital Air-Ground Integration Range at Fort Knox, Kentucky, June 9, 2023. The range complex is designed to replicate a complex operational environment and serves to train and qualify soldiers to detect, identify, engage and defeat stationary and moving targets.

    New Scott AFB Area Engineer takes the reigns

    David Helfrich is a name familiar to personnel at the Scott Air Force Base resident office. He was in that role for five years since he began his career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, January 2018. Helfrich takes the helm as Scott AFB Area Engineer from Jay Fowler, who retired December 2022.

    Future USACE officers and civilians get schooled on military construction

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, Military/IIS Project Management Branch Chief Rachael Haunz and Scott Air Force Base Area Engineer Jay Fowler provided an overview of the military construction program during a District Officer Introductory Course held at Scott AFB, Illinois, Dec. 9. Participants included mid-career officers, warrant officers and civilians across the enterprise who received their first assignment with the USACE.
  • Louisville District and Little Rock District partner to complete Razorback Inn

    A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the delivery of a 136,322-square-foot visiting quarters named the Razorback Inn at Little Rock Air Force Base in Little Rock, Arkansas, Nov. 30, 2022. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District and Little Rock District collaborated to complete the new four-story facility, which includes 250 guest rooms, 20 business suites, guest laundry facilities, housekeeping functional spaces, multi-functional lobby, coffee shop, business center, conference rooms, exercise room and restrooms.

    After 32 years, Fowler moves on to a new mission

    The Louisville District Scott Air Force Base Area Engineer Jay Fowler has been with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for more than 32 years. With the exception of a few brief assignments in operations and engineering, he has spent his time in the Louisville District and St. Louis District Construction Divisions.

    USACE delivers battery testing facility to NSWC Crane

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District and Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane celebrated the delivery of the Submarine Battery Evaluation Center during a ribbon cutting ceremony July 21, 2022, in Crane, Indiana. The test facility will provide full-scale submarine battery and energy storage testing and modeling capabilities unique to the Navy. The outcome of the testing will improve the Navy's ability to predict, control and mitigate low-capacity batteries.

  • Louisville District Emergency Management conducts flood fight training

    Residents who reside along the 981 miles of the Ohio River and its tributaries are no strangers to severe weather. The risk for flood in these areas increase when a location experiences heavy rain, the area has poor drainage or the soil composition is dense. Flood fight training is one way the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville district prepares for these severe weather events.

  • USACE breaks ground on modern vehicle maintenance facility at Fort Campbell

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers broke ground on a $30.5 million tactical equipment maintenance facility, June 29, 2022, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The 36,000 square-foot project will be the first new modern-design field-level vehicle maintenance shop built at Fort Campbell since 2014.

    New deputy commander receives a fast-paced welcome

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District welcomed Maj. Guillermo Guandique as the new deputy commander June 16. The timing of his arrival coincided with numerous construction milestones and provided a quick start in his position. During his first few weeks as deputy commander, he participated in the groundbreaking of the vehicle maintenance facility at Fort Campbell and ribbon cutting ceremonies for the Submarine Battery Evaluation Center at NSWC Crane, VA Columbarium in Indianapolis and Multi-Use Helicopter Trainer at Fort Campbell. Although this is Guandique’s first assignment with USACE, he previously visited Louisville District in April during the sexual assault awareness events.

  • USACE Drones provide an eye in the sky for engineers

    In March of 2020, Geographic Information System Specialist Rachel Byrd and Project Engineer Ryan Fagan with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District’s Engineering Division piloted the inaugural Small Unmanned Aircraft System flight for the district in an open field at the Parklands of Floyds Fork in Louisville, Ky.
