Army Corps of Engineers begins construction on Anderson’s White River Levee

Published March 19, 2013

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Construction will begin this month on a levee along the east side of the White River in Anderson, Ind.   Approximately 3,200 linear feet of an existing levee constructed in the mid- 1930s will be upgraded to increase the area and height of the levee.

The existing levee will also be extended by approximately 1,500 linear feet.  With the addition of flood walls and levee embankments around existing bridges over the White River, the total length of the protection project will be 5,180 feet, extending near Walnut Street  - on the south end -  to 3rd Street on the north.

The estimated annual flood damages in the city of Anderson have exceeded $400,000, impacting over 130 residences and commercial structures.  The planned levee construction will reduce annual flood damages by approximately 90 percent.  The construction project will also include a flood-warning system consisting of stream gauges and a computer/radio-alert system to warn residents in advance of any possible flooding.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District Commander Luke Leonard said, “The White River project in Anderson is an excellent example of what the Continuing Authorities Program can do for a local community.

“We value our partnership with the city of Anderson in providing flood risk management to the city through this levee construction.”

Construction will be accomplished by T&T Construction Enterprises, L.L.C.  The total cost of the levee construction is approximately $3.2 million. The federal governments funds 65 percent and the City of Anderson cost funds 35 percent.

Construction is expected to complete in December of 2014.
