Published Sept. 15, 2010

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District recently awarded a $6.5 million contract for construction of Phase II of the Ohio Riverfront project in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. The contract was awarded to Megen Construction Company, Inc., a small business firm located in Cincinnati. Approximately $4.9 million of the work is underway. Construction of the remaining features may proceed at a later date.

The Phase II-Walnut Street Event Lawn construction will take place on top of a recently constructed parking garage near the Ohio River. The main feature consists of the Event Lawn, which will provide a place for public gatherings both large and small. A granite paved walkway will be constructed along the west and south edges of the lawn. On the western edge, a stage and canopy will be constructed facing the lawn.

A partnering meeting was held on Aug. 27. The meeting included representatives from the contractor, local sponsor (Cincinnati Parks), city, architecture/engineering design firm, and the Corps.

The contract for Phase I of the project was awarded to Monarch Construction Company of Cincinnati in late spring of this year. Phase I consists of an upper and lower plaza that will be connected by way of stairways and a customized elevator. An interactive water feature, a custom steel pergola, site furnishings, lighting, and granite walkways are other key features. Work underway includes the drilling and placement of the geothermal wells.

The overall project will enhance public use and access to amenities of the Ohio River and other riverfront parks.
